Mysuru: An operation to capture a one-and-a-half-year-old tiger, which had strayed into human habitation was successfully accomplished on Wednesday.
The sub-adult tiger, which was shifted to Mysuru zoo had separated from its mother, had been spotted in at Naganahalli village located outside the Nagarahole National Park in the Metikuppe range on Sunday. When efforts undertaken by the forest department personnel to trace the tiger on Sunday and Monday proved futile it was presumed that it may have retreated into the forest again.
However, the locals again spotted the tiger in the field of one Cheluvaiah, while attacking a goat. When farmers nearby shouted in fear, it left the prey and started running. Immediately the forest staff were alerted and on Wednesday morning, a team of veterinarians and other staff led by Deputy Conservator of Forests V. Karikalan combed the area and located the animal after a day-long operation.
The team tranquilised the tiger where after it was shifted to Mysuru zoo for further treatment and observation.
It is gathered from sources that a decision on whether the cub will be released into the forest will be taken by the senior officials later after monitoring its health. Meanwhile doubts were also raised on its survival in the wild, given its inability to hunt.
