Mysuru: Several associations in the city held agitations against BJP MP Prathap Simha for allegedly making derogatory statements against Tippu Sultan who fought against British.
State Kuruba Association, Karnataka Rajya Hindulida Vargagala Jagrutha Vedike, a Backward Classes body, SDPI and other associations held protests in front of the court premises in the city recently.

Protesters alleged that the MP, during a programme in Madikeri, made a derogatory statement against the freedom fighter. Also, the BJP leader has published an article in state level newspapers titled’ Mathandanobba Deshapremiyagalu Sadhyave'(Can a fanatic become a patriot?). Protesters alleged that by making such statements and through articles he is encouraging communal hatred and thereby spreading intolerance.

“Before making such statements he should go back to the history of the state and understand it.”

“On November 11, Tippu Sultan’s Birth anniversary will be celebrated as planned across the state. If the BJP obstructs it, then it will become true that they are spreading intolerance across the nation. We have complete support for the celebration with the state government,” they said.

Earlier, Christian and Hindu Associations from Mangaluru opposed the move of the Congress Government’s encouragement to celebrate Tipu Jayanti across the state. Also, many right wing groups across the state have opposed the celebration and have threatened to disrupt the birth anniversary.

Meanwhile, the chief minister defended his government’s decision to celebrate the birth anniversary of the 18th century legendary king Tipu Sultan (1750-99) and termed the opposition to it as a conspiracy by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and other communal forces, to disturb harmony in society.

“Calling Tipu a fanatic or claims that he indulged in mass conversions are baseless”, he added. The CM also said that his contributions to Sringeri Mutt, Nanjangud temple and Ranganatha Swami temple contradict this claim. “Only a secular person can do it. So, the government has decided to celebrate Tipu Sultan Jayanti,” he said.
