Mysuru: “5S’ principles are nothing but the fundamental principles of every human being. These principles are learnt from our childhood and we do not need to re-learn them, said U K Shenoy, convener, Manufacturing Panel, Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) Mysuru here on Monday.

CIIIn his keynote address at a training programme on ‘5S Principles of House Keeping’ at Hotel Sandesh the Prince in Mysuru, he said 5S principles surely increase quality of living, help avoid accidents and avoid unnecessary burdens.

He urged participants to adopt five principles of housekeeping at home as well as working place to be a disciplined citizen of the country and to be a dignified employee of a company. The event was organized to create a healthy and improved environment at workplaces.
5S is the name of a workplace organization method that uses a list of 5 Japanese words Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke. A 5S principle at the workplace ensures systematic and organized working thereby enhancing productivity.

Adopting 5S is simple and it depends on individual’s mindset. “If you keep changing your house then automatically you will follow 5S principle,” he quoted, adding that, it’s all about change of attitude. However, housing keeping, maintaining tools, tool kits and managing safety is a critical aspect, opined Shenoy.

Further stressing on India’s international market growth rate, he said for India to be number one, we need to concentrate on the growth of our manufacturing sector. Unless we concentrate on this, it is difficult to compete globally. The Manufacturing sector is suffering due to cost structure, wastage, losses and man power. We are doing extremely well in IT and ITES and are also sufficient in knowledge management and no countries can match India when it comes to IT. But, when it comes to manufacturing we need to analyze how we should be the best in the world, he said.

Later, Padma Hemanth, senior faculty of Unique Consultants conducted the Training Programme. She highlighted on understanding the concept of 5s principles of housekeeping, achieving enhanced productivity through implementation of 5S, improving workplace organization and workplace discipline by 5s implementation, developing the right attitude and behaviour to implement 5s at workplace, concepts of ‘Place for Everything and Everything in its Place (PEEP)’, ‘First In First Out (FIFO)’, role of 5s in improving safety and preventing injuries and accidents. In addition, standardization, rationalization, systematization and workplace improvement due to 5S implementation and conducting 5s audits and suggesting improvements and other aspects were highlighted.
