Mysuru: Truckers’ strike demanding withdrawal of hike in third party insurance premiums has left thousands of labourers penniless as they are left in the lurch without jobs.
The construction activity in the city has come to a standstill and labourers are seen returning empty handed daily. The unprecedented drought has aggravated the situation forcing the labour community out of its villages to cities. The non-availability of steel, cement and other raw materials has left labourer stranded without jobs.
Summer showers on Tuesday, April 4 have brought in little relief to an otherwise water starved regions and some of them are planning to return to their villages. However, the fertiliser stocks which arrived from Gujarat are lying in the railway station with no takers due to truck strike. Some foresee scarcity in essential commodities once existing stocks get cleared which might result in an inflationary spiral.
