Mysuru: During the next University of Mysore council meeting, a decision will be taken to name the varisty as “Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar Mysore University” who was the its founder, said Dayanand Mane, Vice Chancellor (incharge).

Speaking during the birth anniversary celebration of UoM Founder Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar which was held for the first time at Crawford Hall here on June 9, Dayanand Mane said, “We can’t forget our parents. On the same lines, we can’t forget University of Mysore Founder Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar. Hence I have decided to rename University of Mysore as Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar Mysore University. In the next council meeting which is scheduled on June 22, we will take a decision and the same will be sent to government for its consideration. Apart from this the vice Chancellor’s chamber was having all the retired VCs’ photo but surprisingly it was not having the founders photo. Hence, I spoke to the expert and now I have put Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar photo.”

C S Dwarakanath, advocate in the high court who was the chief guest said, “If the Bahujana Chaluvali was not born, people could not have come across the contribution of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar. Krishnaraja Wadiyar to Mysuru which is immense. Not only in education but also in health, industry and veterinary sextors his contribution is immense. He was also responsible for setting up of magistrate, munsiff and high courts. Earlier for doing medicine, people were going to Madras. After seeing the plight of the people he also came out with much needed medical college. Apart from all these, his contribution to the welfare of women is also immense; it was he who introduced eight week maternity leave for women. His social concern and commitment, social responsibility and administrative skills were exceptional. The thinking of Krishnaraja wadiyar was similar to that of Tipu Sultan and Devaraj Urs. In the last 150 years, the contributions of Tipu Sultan, Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, Ambedkar and Devaraj Urs are immense.

Shocked over Kuvempu statue

During my visit to the University of Mysore though I have high regards for Kuvempu, I was surprised to see his statue instead of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar who happens to be the founder of UoM but later I was relieved after seeing the statue of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar atleast in front of the Crawford Hall. Even if Kuvempu had been there, he would have felt the same”, he expressed.

‘UoM should take up research on Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar’

“There are many researches which are not of much use to the society. Hence University of Mysore authorities should take initiatives to promote research on Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar. Minimum 10 to 20 different researches can be taken up on Krishnaraja Wadiyar whose contribution to Mysuru and university is immense. Comparative study between Tipu Sultan and Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar can also be taken up. Apart from this, UoM authorities should also conduct regular activities on Krishnaraja Wadiyar. Efforts should also be put to revive the study centre of Krishnaraja Wadiyar at UoM which is almost defunct”, said Dwarkanath.

For the new Registrar of UoM D Bharathi this was her first official programme.
