Western Ganga dynasty inscription discovered in Basavanahalli

Mysuru: An inscription belonging to the Western Ganga dynasty was found in Basavanahalli village of Bannur in the district.

The village of Basavanahalli is said to be a densely populated and historic from the times of the Ganga’s. The village houses a rare collection of epic sculptures, civilizations, rare martial arts of the Hoysalas empire, small and minor sculptures and so on.

The inscription was found on a white granite stone, belonging to the 6th century, in a bamboo field beside a farmhouse on the outskirts, were Satyavakya Permanaadi, the king of the Western Ganga is said to be lying. The eucalyptus planted next to the stone has fully grown and covered the stone. The people of the town worship the Naga Kanye sculpture adjacent to the stone. It is an old folk belief that the head of those who touch the stone would explode into a thousand pieces. Hence the people did not go near the stone.

Swami Nadanandanath Swamyas of Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama of Yachenahalli brought this to the notice of the villagers by observing a rare inscription of the ruined Ganga on it.  Dr SG Ramadasa Reddy, Professor of History at Government First Class College of Mysuru convinced the villagers of the importance of the inscriptions of the stone and its historical significance.

Dr SG Ramadasa Reddy interpreted to the villagers that the inscription belonged to the 7th century and contains information about King of Truth Satyavakya Permanaadi. The villagers, who are aware of the significance of the inscription, have now come forward to preserve it.
