Mysuru: With summer intensifying and water resources coming under pressure, MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah has directed officials to take immediate and proactive measures to ensure that no part of the district faces a shortage of drinking water.

Presiding over a review meeting at the Zilla Panchayat on Wednesday, Yathindra stressed the need for constant monitoring and timely intervention to tackle emerging water-related challenges. He instructed officials to identify water-stressed villages and carry out regular field inspections to assess the ground situation accurately.

Focus on vulnerable areas

During the meeting, officials were asked to prepare a comprehensive list of villages that are likely to face water scarcity in the coming weeks. Yathindra emphasised that early identification of such areas would help in deploying resources efficiently and avoiding crisis situations.

He also directed authorities to closely monitor groundwater levels and ensure that necessary steps are taken to sustain water availability, especially in rural pockets.

Review of drinking water schemes

The MLC reviewed the status of ongoing multi-village drinking water schemes and instructed officials to resolve operational issues without delay. He highlighted that any disruption in these schemes could directly impact large populations dependent on them.

Officials were told to address technical bottlenecks and ensure that infrastructure related to water supply functions smoothly during the peak summer period.

Contingency planning and tanker supply

As part of preparedness measures, Yathindra asked officials to compile a list of private borewells that could be utilised in case of emergency. He also directed them to identify villages that may require water supply through tankers.

A detailed contingency plan must be put in place to tackle unforeseen shortages, he said, adding that coordination between departments would be key to effective implementation.

Drinking water top priority

Emphasising the seriousness of the situation, Yathindra said that ensuring uninterrupted drinking water supply must be treated as the highest priority during summer. He instructed officials to immediately escalate any shortage of funds or technical issues to higher authorities to avoid delays in resolution.

He reiterated that no village should be left without access to safe drinking water under any circumstances.

Public grievances raised

Following the review meeting, members of the public brought several issues to the attention of officials. These included concerns over land allocation for burial grounds, delays in issuing title deeds, and a shortage of doctors in primary health centres.

Officials assured that the grievances would be examined and necessary action taken.

Officials present

The meeting was attended by senior district officials, including Deputy Commissioner G Lakshmikanth Reddy, Zilla Panchayat CEO S. Ukesh Kumar, and other department representatives.

Conclusion

With rising temperatures posing a serious challenge to water availability, the district administration’s focus on preparedness and early intervention is expected to play a crucial role in preventing shortages. The emphasis on contingency planning and swift resolution of issues reflects a proactive approach to ensuring water security during the summer months.
