Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the operator of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), has issued a statement denying any changes to its flight information display system, following widespread social media claims. Several posts, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), circulated videos and images alleging that Hindi had been removed from the airport’s display boards, with only English and Kannada appearing. This sparked a debate online, with users both defending and opposing the supposed modification.
BIAL responded by affirming that there was no alteration in the system. “The flight displays still feature English and Kannada to serve passengers effectively, as per standard procedures. Furthermore, wayfinding signages across the terminals display English, Kannada, and Hindi,” the statement read.
The controversy began when a video claiming the change gained traction on X, amassing over 2 million views. While some users applauded the decision as bold, others questioned its practicality. One user pointed out, “How does removing Hindi from signs help the 54% of Bengaluru’s population who don’t speak Kannada? More languages would make travel easier for all citizens.”
Another user criticized the exclusion of Hindi, stating, “While I understand the desire for linguistic balance, removing Hindi at travel hubs like airports is counterproductive. These places are meant to assist travelers, not create confusion.”
