Police raid homestays after rape of Israeli in Karnataka
Days after an Israeli visitor was brutally assaulted near the UNESCO-listed Hampi, authorities have ramped up security, increasing nighttime patrols and conducting surprise inspections at hotels to restore confidence among tourists.
Koppal Superintendent of Police L Arasiddi led drug raids across homestays and resorts in Basapura, Anegundi, and Sanapur, thoroughly reviewing documents and verifying compliance.
Resort and homestay operators have been instructed to bolster security measures, particularly for international visitors. They are mandated to install surveillance cameras and notify law enforcement about foreign guests.
“All overseas tourists must complete Form C, submit visa and passport details, and provide photographs at the local police station,” the officer informed PTI.
Authorities have installed roadblocks for vehicle screenings and doubled highway patrol units. Additionally, an inspector-level officer will oversee night patrols in Anegundi and Sanapur.
Homestay owners have also been asked to caution visitors against venturing out at night due to past instances of wildlife encounters.
Last week’s shocking assault on an Israeli woman and a local homestay proprietor, followed by the killing of an Odisha traveller, triggered alarm among tourists. Three suspects responsible for the heinous crime were swiftly arrested.
Despite Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s assurances of enhanced safety, several foreign tourists have reportedly exited Hampi. “The government is fully committed to safeguarding every individual, including travelers,” he reiterated.
