Protest Against BBMP Waste Disposal Unit in KGF
KGF : On Friday, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) organized a protest in front of the taluk administration building to oppose the proposed construction of a BBMP waste disposal unit on land belonging to Bharat Gold Mines Limited (BGML). The protestors have demanded an immediate withdrawal of the government’s decision regarding the project.
The planned waste disposal unit is set to utilize 318 acres of land situated between Badamakanahalli and Betamangala. However, local authorities have denied the existence of such a proposal, despite the site having been inspected by the District Collector and Tehsildar.
CPM leaders raised several concerns about the potential environmental and health impacts on the local community. They pointed out that the existing waste management issues in KGF, where 65 tons of garbage are collected daily, have not been adequately addressed. Additionally, they criticized the government’s failure to honor promises related to the rights of contract workers and the delay in implementing a court decision to allocate housing to BGML workers.
Tehsildar Nagaveni, who received the petition from the protesters, confirmed that there is currently no proposal for the BBMP waste disposal unit. She assured that the District Collector would provide further clarification on the matter.
The protest was spearheaded by CPM leaders P. Anandaraj, Jayaraman, Tirupati, T. Shivaraj, Ramamurthy, and Shankar, who vowed to persist in their efforts to challenge the decision.
