In a late-night operation on Tuesday, Raichur authorities demolished an unauthorized temple built on civic amenities (C.A.) land in LBS Nagar. The site, reserved for constructing a government high school, was cleared to proceed with the long-delayed project.
Led by Assistant Commissioner Gajanan Balle, the operation involved heavy police security and a JCB machine. The structure, initially a storage shed, had been converted into a temple housing Shiva and Ganesha idols. Despite the site being approved for a school on June 1, 2022, local resistance delayed the project.
Deputy Commissioner K. Nitish explained, “The land was allotted for a government school, but objections from residents led to the shed’s transformation into a temple, stalling construction.” The move was part of a coordinated effort involving Raichur CMC Commissioner Gurusiddayya, senior police officials, and multiple inspectors.
The operation faced strong local opposition but proceeded without incident. Authorities emphasized the Karnataka-Karnataka Region Development Board (KKRDB) grant for the school is now being utilized, with work on the four-classroom building set to begin immediately.
“This decision prioritizes community welfare by providing essential educational infrastructure,” Nitish added. Local officials hope the school will address educational needs and benefit future generations.
