Raichur [Karnataka]: A Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) in Raichur district has been suspended for allegedly participating in a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) event while wearing the organisation’s uniform, officials confirmed on Friday.
Officer suspended for misconduct
The officer, posted at Sirawar Taluk Panchayat, faced disciplinary action after state officials raised concerns over his participation in the RSS event. Authorities viewed the act as a violation of the service conduct rules, which prohibit government employees from engaging in political or ideological activities while in service.
Sources said the officer was seen taking part in a Shakha (training assembly) organised by the RSS, dressed in the organisation’s traditional khaki attire. Following an internal inquiry, the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department issued a suspension order pending further investigation.
Minister Priyank Kharge calls for action
The suspension follows a letter by Karnataka Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Priyank Kharge, addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urging strict action against government officers and employees found to be associated with or participating in RSS activities.
Kharge, in his communication, emphasised that government officials must maintain political neutrality and not align themselves with any private or ideological organisation. He also reiterated that the state’s administrative machinery should remain independent of religious or political influence.
Cabinet bans private group activities in public institutions
In a related move, the Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday decided to ban activities of private organisations in government and government-aided schools, colleges, and public spaces. The decision specifically aims to prevent RSS from conducting Shakha activities within educational institutions or on public premises.
Officials stated that the measure was necessary to “preserve the secular character of public institutions” and ensure that no ideological organisation exerts influence over students or government property.
The government is expected to issue a formal notification soon outlining the scope of the ban and guidelines for enforcement.
Broader context
The decision has sparked political debate in the state, with supporters of the move calling it a step toward upholding constitutional values, while critics claim it targets specific organisations. The state government, however, maintained that the order applies uniformly to all private entities, irrespective of ideology.
The suspended PDO will remain under scrutiny until a departmental inquiry concludes. Officials said further disciplinary measures could follow depending on the findings.
