Raichur sees rising number of maternal deaths
In a tragic incident, a 24-year-old woman named Saraswati passed away three days after undergoing a cesarean delivery at the Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) on January 2. Saraswati, a resident of Haddinal in Devadurg taluk, delivered her fourth child, a baby boy, before being shifted to the ICU due to severe hypertension. Despite medical efforts, she could not recover and died on January 7, according to Dr. Bhaskar, the hospital’s medical superintendent.
This heartbreaking loss is part of a worrying trend in Raichur district, where 12 pregnant or postpartum women have lost their lives over the past three months. Of these fatalities, five were reported at RIMS alone, raising serious questions about the quality of maternal healthcare services in the region.
The string of maternal deaths has highlighted the urgent need for improved medical facilities, timely interventions, and better prenatal care to address complications. Health authorities must prioritize this issue to prevent further tragedies.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical gaps in maternal health systems and the pressing need for reform.
