Raichur’s PU Colleges Struggle With Faculty Shortage, Quality Concerns Grow
Raichur: Government pre-university (PU) colleges in Raichur district are facing a critical shortage of permanent principals and lecturers, pushing these institutions to depend heavily on guest faculty. Of the 43 government PU colleges, only four currently have regular principals, and no clarity has emerged regarding fresh appointments this academic year.
Currently, the teaching force consists of 221 permanent lecturers alongside 141 guest lecturers. As classes are scheduled to resume on June 2, anxiety is mounting among students and parents regarding the quality of education.
This issue, which earlier plagued primary and high schools, has now made its way into pre-university education. Parents are increasingly considering private institutions, but for many, financial constraints make that option unrealistic. “Disadvantaged students are forced to adjust within the limited scope of government colleges. These persistent issues are crushing their academic aspirations,” lamented Mallikarjun Dinni, a parent from Siya Talab.
According to DDPU Kottur Basappa, the vacancy crisis in Raichur’s PU colleges is a long-standing one. “Though the recruitment process was wrapped up recently with 21 candidates undergoing counselling, only six appointments as principals are confirmed. The rest remain uncertain,” he explained. He added that most newly posted principals return to their native districts post-probation, causing recurrent vacancies.
Parents fear that delays in recruitment will continue to hamper progress. Acting principals are reportedly unwilling to shoulder additional duties, further weakening academic standards. The district’s 30th place in the II PU results (58.7% pass rate) reflects this administrative neglect.
