A shocking incident of moral policing in Ramanagara on Saturday left a Muslim couple from Bengaluru traumatised. Niamat Khan and his wife, Salmabanu, were attacked by a group of youths while sitting and talking near Rukmini Layout, behind APMC.
The assailants, reportedly from Rangarayanakere, confronted the couple with communal overtones, asking Salmabanu, “Are you a Muslim woman sitting with a Hindu boy?” When Niamat intervened, the group brutally attacked him with sticks, iron rods, and bricks.
Salmabanu, who attempted to shield her husband, was also assaulted. She was dragged by her hair during the attack, further escalating the violence. Fortunately, the police arrived in time to intervene, arresting three suspects identified as Bakash Pasha, Wajid Pasha, and Salman Pasha, all residents of Ramanagara.
A case has been registered at the Aizur police station against six other suspects, who remain absconding. Authorities are actively working to apprehend the remaining culprits.
Niamat, who works as a security guard at an under-construction house in Rukmini Layout, had been visited by his wife Salmabanu that day to collect money for their children’s school fees. The unprovoked attack has left the couple severely shaken.
This incident has underscored the urgent need for heightened vigilance against acts of moral policing and communal violence in the region.
