Ramanagara Women Fall Victim to Work-from-Home Scams, Lose Over Rs 20 Lakh
Ramanagara: In a series of shocking fraud cases, two women from Ramanagara district were duped of a total of Rs 20 lakh after being lured by fake work-from-home job offers. The victims, S. Shalini from Dodda Anamanahalli in Kanakapura taluk and Shahida Banu from Channapatna Town, were swindled out of Rs 16.55 lakh and Rs 3.46 lakh, respectively.
Shalini was first contacted by fraudsters on December 10, who promised her Rs 40 for completing a review and additional earnings for completing simple tasks such as Google reviews and data work. Initially, she received small payments, which led her to trust the scammers. However, when she was asked to deposit larger amounts, the promised payments ceased. Ultimately, Shalini transferred Rs 16.55 lakh, realizing too late that she had been scammed.
Similarly, Shahida was lured by a work-from-home offer through a WhatsApp link and added to a Telegram group. After completing several reviews, she was asked to deposit Rs 2,000, which escalated into multiple transactions, leading to a loss of Rs 3.46 lakh.
Both women have lodged complaints with the Ramanagara Cyber Economic and Narcotics (CEN) police station.
In separate incidents, Venkataramanaswamy, a teacher, lost Rs 5.21 lakh to a fake Canara Bank debit card renewal scam, and H.M. Bharath from Harohalli taluk was swindled out of Rs 6.09 lakh in a loan fraud.
These incidents highlight the growing prevalence of online scams targeting unsuspecting victims.
