Ramanagara: Kudur’s Ramlila Maidan is undergoing a transformation with the construction of a ₹13-crore hi-tech stadium, sparking mixed reactions among locals. The project involves tree felling on the 2-acre site, formerly a tranquil spot surrounded by diverse tree species.
The stadium will feature modern amenities, including a separate Prasad room for men and women, an indoor sports area for games like chess and carrom, and a children’s garden with play equipment. An ‘L’-shaped seating area with tensile roofing will provide spectators with comfortable viewing, while a cricket practice net and four high-mast lights will facilitate nighttime events.
Further development plans include relocating the adjacent silk department building to make way for an indoor stadium, accommodating shuttle badminton, volleyball, and tennis. Three gates will be installed on the north, south, and east sides of the ground.
However, the project’s commencement was met with resistance from locals, who questioned the necessity of felling trees. Some argued that trimming tree tops could be an alternative solution. Police intervention resolved the initial standoff, allowing the contractor, who obtained the bid from the forest department, to proceed with the project.
The community remains divided, with some welcoming the development as essential for the town’s growth, while others lament the loss of the area’s natural charm and walking spot.
