Shimoga, 22 August 2024 — A dance teacher employed at a residential school in Shimoga district was arrested on Wednesday by Nelamangala police near Bengaluru. The arrest follows serious allegations of sexual assault involving five female students.

The 45-year-old teacher had been working at the residential school for approximately seven months. The arrest came after a complaint was filed by the school’s principal, based on statements made by one of the students. The police subsequently registered an FIR and took the accused into custody under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

According to reports, five out of the 21 female students at the residential school have accused the teacher of sexual assault. The remaining students have provided witness statements regarding the teacher’s inappropriate actions. The Superintendent of Police, G.K. Mithunkumar, indicated that the accused has undergone a medical examination and personal consultation. This process aims to ascertain if there are additional victims among the students.

The investigation has raised significant concerns about the safety and well-being of students in residential schools. The police are actively seeking further information and evidence to address any other potential cases of abuse.

SP Mithunkumar has urged students and parents to report any instances of violence or sexual harassment promptly. He emphasized the importance of immediately contacting the dedicated child protection helpline, 1098, or the nearest police station to ensure swift action and support for victims.

This case underscores the critical need for vigilance and protective measures within educational institutions, particularly residential schools, to safeguard students from such grievous violations.
