Anjani, a 17-year-old tigress housed at the Tiger and Lion Safari in Tyavarekoppa, Shivamogga, passed away on Wednesday night due to complications from multi-organ failure. Her demise reduces the number of tigers in the zoo-cum-safari to five, comprising one male and four females.

According to Executive Director Amarakshara MV, Anjani was brought to Tyavarekoppa in 2022 from the rescue center at Koorgalli, Mysuru. Initially showcased to visitors, she was removed from public display last year after her muscle condition deteriorated. Her physical weakness necessitated assistance from her keeper, who fed her daily. Described as a docile and obedient tiger, she followed commands diligently.

The safari currently hosts Vijay, Nivedita, Poornima, Seetha, and Dashami. However, Vijay’s advanced age makes breeding unfeasible, and he lacks compatibility with the tigresses. Efforts are underway to introduce a breeding pair, with discussions ongoing with a Maharashtra zoo and Pilikula Biological Park near Mangaluru.

Veterinary specialists from Shivamogga’s government veterinary college, alongside the zoo’s veterinarian, conducted Anjani’s post-mortem. Her remains were cremated in a forest area within the safari’s jurisdiction.

The loss of Anjani underscores the challenges faced by aging animals in captivity. As the zoo works to secure breeding partners, it aims to ensure the sustainability of its tiger population.
