In a tragic incident on Sunday, a 41-year-old agricultural worker, Hanumanthappa, was killed by a wild elephant in the Puradal reserve forest of Shivamogga district. The attack occurred while Hanumanthappa was returning home after his shift as a watchman at an arecanut estate.
Deputy Conservator of Forests Prasanna Krishna Patagar confirmed that Hanumanthappa, a resident of Lakshmeshwara in Gadag district, had been working in the area for the past five years. His body was discovered by his wife and local villagers following a search. An autopsy was performed at Mc Gann Hospital, and the body has been sent back to his native village.
Local resident Basavarajendra noted that Hanumanthappa usually returned home by 7 p.m., and his absence prompted a search. He highlighted ongoing concerns about wild elephants damaging crops and the need for better measures to control the menace.
Forest officials have conducted a spot inspection and are investigating the incident. Compensation will be provided to Hanumanthappa’s family as per legal provisions.
