In a life-or-death drama that unfolded in Shivamogga district, two Bengaluru-based constables sprang into action and rescued a 25-year-old man moments before he could take his own life. The young man, neck-deep in debt and battling despair, had locked himself in a room with a noose fashioned from his mother’s sari.

On May 10, the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) team, Vinay Kumar P and Santosh Kumar NA, responded to an urgent call from the man’s distraught mother in Veerapura, Bhadravathi. The officers initially struggled to locate the exact house due to similar place names but finally arrived after the mother shared a landmark — the Om Shakti temple.

When the officers reached the scene, they found the mother weeping at the doorstep. Inside the locked room, her only son stood on a chair, visibly intoxicated, preparing to end his life. A barking pet dog, also trapped inside, added to the chaos.

The constables began speaking to the youth through the door, urging him to reconsider. They referenced the bravery of soldiers his age and reminded him of his worth. But when he kicked away the chair, the officers broke down the door and intervened just in time—removing the noose and pulling him to safety.

The youth later revealed he had been jobless for six months and was frustrated about relying on his mother for basic needs. Once a truck driver supporting his family, his sense of failure pushed him to the edge.

Superintendent of Police Mithun Kumar GK commended the timely response, stressing the life-saving importance of calling 112 during crises.
