A tick specimen from the Betta Basavani forest area in Thirthahalli, Shivamogga district, has tested positive for Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), commonly known as monkey fever. This marks the season’s first reported case.
In response, health officials have activated standard protocols, including systematic tick collection and monitoring a 5-km radius around the detection site for fever symptoms among residents. Preventive measures, such as applying oil to deter tick bites, are being recommended to the public.
Dr. Harshavardhan KJ, special officer from the virology department in Shivamogga, confirmed ongoing efforts to track and analyze tick specimens in KFD-prone regions. While human samples are processed at a local laboratory, tick specimens are sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune, for confirmation.
KFD, which primarily affects districts along the Western Ghats, is most prevalent from December to June. The disease previously caused significant concern, including 12 fatalities in 2019. Health authorities are urging vigilance and cooperation to mitigate risks and prevent further spread.
