Several villages across Shivamogga district witnessed a surprising spell of hailstorm and rainfall on Thursday evening, offering respite from the scorching temperatures. Areas under Thagarthi gram panchayat received heavy showers, while Gowthamapura gram panchayat saw light rain.
Earlier in the day, temperatures soared to 35.8°C, but by afternoon, thunderstorms brewed, followed by continuous rainfall. Nagappa, a farmer from Kudigere village in Sagar taluk, shared that he and his workers struggled with the heat while tending to their areca farm. “Post-lunch, the rain came down steadily for over an hour, cooling the surroundings,” he said.
The showers after 4 pm provided a welcome drop in temperatures. Farmers in Sagar taluk, where ginger cultivation dominates, had been worried about the extreme heat affecting their preparations. The downpour has now rekindled hopes, especially in Thagarthi, where adequate moisture is crucial for both ginger and maize crops at this stage.
Shivamogga city and nearby villages also felt the refreshing coolness post-rain, as the weather shifted significantly. Agricultural experts predict similar rainfall activity in many parts of the district over the next couple of days, much to the relief of the farming community.
