Shimoga: A shocking incident has emerged from Karnataka’s Shimoga district, where a 45-year-old woman named Geethamma died following a prolonged and violent exorcism ritual.
The incident occurred in Jambaraghatta village, Bhadravati taluk. According to police reports, Geethamma’s son, Sanjay, believed his mother was possessed by an evil spirit. Acting on this belief, he took her to a woman named Asha, a self-styled healer reputed in the village for claiming supernatural abilities.
During the ritual, Asha allegedly subjected Geethamma to a brutal beating for nearly six hours under the pretext of driving out the “spirit.” Geethamma later died from the severe injuries she sustained during the assault.
The Holehonnur police have arrested both Sanjay and Asha. Authorities have registered a case of murder and are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The case has triggered widespread outrage and renewed concern over unscientific practices and blind faith leading to fatal outcomes in rural areas.
