On January 16, a shocking incident of animal cruelty was reported in Hosanagara taluk, where a man named Wazid allegedly killed a dog by hurling a large stone at its head. After confirming the dog’s death, the accused disposed of the body. The disturbing act came to light when a local resident recorded the incident and shared the footage with former MP and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi.
Upon learning of the incident, Gandhi took immediate action, contacting the Animal Welfare Board and writing to the Senior Veterinary Officer at Ripponpete Veterinary Hospital and the Superintendent of Police (SP) GK Mithun Kumar. She urged the authorities to take strict action against the accused. Gandhi also spoke directly with the Ripponpete Police Sub-Inspector and the SP, prompting swift police intervention.
The police, after reviewing the complaint and the video evidence, registered a case against Wazid. Sources revealed that Wazid allegedly killed the dog out of frustration, claiming it had been attacking his livestock and hens. An FIR has been filed, and investigations are ongoing.
This intervention highlights the role of animal rights advocates in ensuring accountability and legal action in cases of cruelty against animals.
