The emergence of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Shivamogga has heightened attention toward this respiratory infection. Five children, aged one to two years, were diagnosed with the virus, making this the first documented instance in the district. This occurrence predates similar cases recently identified in Bengaluru. Fortunately, all the affected children have recovered and were discharged, as reported by a private hospital to district health officials.
Dr. Dhananjay Sarji, a pediatric specialist in Shivamogga, explained that laboratory tests confirmed the virus in swab samples collected due to COVID-19 concerns. He stated that cases began surfacing as early as September and October, with symptoms resembling other respiratory illnesses. Despite the virus being relatively common, he reassured that it typically resolves without serious complications.
Similar infections have been detected in Nagpur and other parts of India, yet health experts stress that HMPV does not pose a grave threat like COVID-19. The Karnataka government has introduced precautionary measures, urging the public to maintain hygiene, use hand sanitizers or soap, cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and avoid crowded areas. Prompt medical attention is recommended for any respiratory symptoms.
While the virus warrants caution, it is important to note that all cases so far have resulted in full recoveries. Public health authorities remain vigilant to prevent further spread.
