A soulful new addition to Kannada liturgical music, titled ‘Pavitra Kutumba’, was officially launched on June 21 in Shivamogga by the musical ensemble Spiritus. The hymn shines a light on the sacredness of family life in Christian tradition, urging the faithful to embrace the home as a space of grace, unity, and prayer.

The devotional piece carries the imprimatur of Dr Francis Serrao SJ, Bishop of Shimoga, affirming its spiritual and liturgical value. Fr Alphonse Nelson D’Souza, the composer and lyricist, crafted the hymn with the intent of nurturing family spirituality and reflection.

Vocals were rendered by Shwetha Prabhu and Fr Nelson D’Souza, with Cajetan Dias overseeing the arrangement, direction, and harmonisation. The track was recorded at Eden Diji Studio, Bengaluru, and later mixed and mastered by Johnson Durai at Elim Multitech Studio. Visuals for the hymn were handled by Br Jeevan SJ, who led the videography and editing.

‘Pavitra Kutumba’ is seen as a contemporary call to deepen spiritual life within households, portraying the family not just as a social unit, but as a “domestic church.”

Fr Nelson D’Souza, ordained in 2016, is the parish priest of Nirmala Mathe Church, Harapanahalli, and also manages the Nirmala Schools under the Diocese of Shimoga. Deeply committed to sacred music, he continues to create simple yet powerful hymns aimed at uplifting the faithful.
