Shimoga: Authorities Seize 50 kg of Smuggled Chinese Garlic
In a crackdown on illegal imports, the Food Safety and Quality Authority of India raided eight locations in Shimoga, seizing over 50 kg of Chinese garlic. The banned garlic, valued at Rs 80 per kg, was being sold alongside local produce, potentially threatening public health.
Laboratory tests are underway to confirm the garlic’s origin and quality. Officials will take further action based on the test results.
Indian farmers sell their garlic for Rs 250-400 per kg, whereas Chinese garlic is sold for significantly less, making it an attractive option for some consumers. However, experts warn that Chinese garlic contains harmful chemicals, posing risks to kidney and liver health.
