Shivamogga bird lovers turn saviours as mercury hits 40°C
As Shivamogga, often dubbed the “gateway to Malnad,” bakes under an intense 40°C heatwave, both people and birds are struggling to cope. While humans can seek out water, the voiceless avian population suffers in silence. Stepping up to meet this challenge, nature lovers and bird watchers across the district are rallying to provide food and water for these feathered beings.
The D.K. Shivakumar Brigade, in collaboration with local groups, has launched a thoughtful initiative to combat the summer distress faced by birds. Recognizing the lack of natural water sources during the dry months, they’ve begun placing water and grains in tree canopies around the city, especially near the tourist lodge area. These provisions are monitored every two days to ensure timely refills.
What makes their effort stand out is their use of repurposed 2-litre juice bottles. Each bottle is partially filled with grains, topped with water, and hung from tree branches using strong ropes. A small plastic plate below serves as a perch and feeder. The setup ensures easy access for birds, especially during their active hours in the morning and evening.
Devendrappa, the initiative’s coordinator, mentioned that around 150 such feeders are being installed this season. “Summer hits birds hard. Our aim is to create consistent water and food points in tree shade,” he said. Fellow volunteer Kavita added, “This is a small way to ease their suffering. We’ll keep going as long as birds are around.”
