With improved road and air connectivity and a growing pool of skilled professionals, Shivamogga holds strong potential to emerge as a digital powerhouse in Karnataka, industry leaders said on Saturday.

The views were expressed during the ‘Beyond Bengaluru’ programme organised to explore opportunities for IT industries outside the State capital. Entrepreneurs and representatives of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) participated in the discussion.

Looking beyond Bengaluru

Founders of tech companies stressed the need to decentralise Karnataka’s IT growth, which has long been concentrated in Bengaluru. They noted that cities like Shivamogga offer lower operational costs, better quality of life and access to emerging talent from engineering and degree colleges in the Malnad region.

Participants emphasised that creating multiple technology clusters across Karnataka could reduce pressure on Bengaluru’s infrastructure while ensuring balanced regional development.

Connectivity and talent advantage

Improved connectivity — including enhanced highway networks and the operationalisation of Shivamogga Airport — was highlighted as a key enabler. Industry representatives pointed out that seamless transport links can attract investors who are seeking expansion opportunities beyond saturated urban centres.

They also underlined the availability of a talented youth population eager to work in technology, digital services and startup ecosystems. With appropriate policy support, incubation centres and digital infrastructure, Shivamogga could replicate aspects of Bengaluru’s success story.

A vision for regional growth

Speakers at the event said Karnataka has the capacity to build “many Bengalurus” by nurturing emerging cities. Encouraging IT parks, co-working hubs and skill development initiatives in tier-2 cities could unlock new economic momentum.

As Karnataka continues to position itself as a leading technology State, stakeholders believe that empowering districts like Shivamogga will be crucial for inclusive growth and long-term sustainability.
