The new center aims to address the growing issue of addiction that is increasingly affecting youth, women, and vulnerable populations. With a focus on comprehensive care, treatment, and rehabilitation, the initiative seeks to mitigate the societal harm caused by substance abuse.
The inauguration ceremony will feature key figures, including Hon’ble Mr. Michael D Souza, an Indian businessman based in Dubai, who will officially open the center. Most Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, the Bishop of the Mangalore Diocese, will bless the center, while Venerable Deepak Valerian Tauro will serve as the Chief Guest.
Prominent speakers at the event will include Honourable Vijayalakshmi Shibaruru, a renowned journalist, and Honourable Atmadas Yami, a multi-religious sage. Additional speakers include various government officials, such as Mr. U. T. Khader, Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly, and local MLAs.
The event is expected to draw over 50 distinguished guests, more than 100 donors, and thousands of well-wishers, all united under the motto, “Let’s Build a Drug-Free Society.” The organization encourages community support in promoting its mission both before and after the inauguration.
A Legacy of Service
The foundation of Snehalaya was laid on August 26, 2009, coinciding with the 99th birthday of Saint Mother Teresa. Inspired by her ideals, Joseph Crasta, an ordinary auto driver, began his journey of service by helping homeless individuals in Mangalore. This act of kindness sparked a movement that has since rescued thousands of people from destitution.
Starting from humble beginnings, Snehalaya has evolved into a haven for the mentally ill, neglected, and elderly, providing a loving home regardless of caste or creed. Today, the trust operates various programs, including a Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Center for both men and women, a free mid-day meal initiative for hospital patient attendants, and emergency relief efforts during natural disasters.
As Snehalaya embarks on this new chapter with the De-addiction Center, it remains committed to its mission of serving humanity and fostering a compassionate community. The organization calls on the public to join in this vital effort to build a drug-free society and support individuals in their journey toward recovery.
