A sharp-witted police constable in Erode district, Tamil Nadu, foiled a kidnapping attempt during the early hours of Saturday. Harish Kumar, a seasoned officer, was on night duty at the Kallipatty check post when he stopped an SUV around 1:30 am for a routine inspection. From within the vehicle, he overheard a distressed voice crying for help.

Upon questioning, the SUV driver insisted that the passenger was mentally unstable. Sensing something amiss, the watchful constable stayed alert. Just as the car prepared to speed away, he grabbed the victim’s arm and pulled him out, forcing the assailants to flee.

The rescued individual was identified as 21-year-old Eswaravel, a resident of Hebbal, Bengaluru. He recounted that a group of four abductors had seized him near a temple on Friday evening. The gang, which spoke Malayalam, had tried to coerce him into withdrawing cash from an ATM. Their ultimate plan was to demand a hefty ransom of ₹2 crore from his father, K. Muthu.

Following his dramatic rescue, Eswaravel was escorted to Bhavanisagar police station, where authorities quickly alerted the Hebbal police in Karnataka. He is now in safe custody and will soon be handed over to his home state’s law enforcement for further investigation.
