Due to abundant rainfall in Karnataka, hydropower generation has surged, leading to a temporary halt in power generation at six units of the Raichur Thermal Power Plant (RTPS) and two units of the Yaramaras Thermal Power Plant (YTPS).

With most reservoirs filled and hydroelectric power stations operating at full capacity, Karnataka Power Corporation (KPC) has paused production at several thermal units. Additionally, increased availability of wind and solar power has further reduced the reliance on thermal power.

Currently, only two RTPS units are generating electricity, while the 6th unit (with a capacity of 210 MW) is undergoing annual maintenance. RTPS Chief Executive Director P. Narayana Gajakosha confirmed the temporary shutdown of units 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7.

YTPS Chief Executive Director Gangadhara also stated that two units, each with a capacity of 800 MW, have been shut down due to low electricity demand. Both plants have sufficient coal stock, and there has been a reduction in coal rake arrivals due to decreased production.

The shutdown allows for maintenance and the resolution of technical issues encountered during the summer. Thermal power stations play a significant role in Karnataka’s electricity generation, and this temporary halt helps stabilise the grid during periods of high hydropower generation
