Three living in self-imposed house arrest rescued in Brahmavar

Udupi: In a tragic incident, a woman and her daughter lived imprisoned away from sunlight for seven years fearing a son who had mental illness and aggressive behaviour. The incident came to light on Friday August 27 in Chantaru Gram Panchayat, Brahmavar in the district.

The woman and her daughter are identified as Gulabi Shetty (80) and Vatija Shetty (50).

The whole ordeal came to an end on Friday when social worker Vishu Shetty Ambalpady rescued them with the help of the local residents. The mentally ill man has been admitted to Dr. A. V. Baliga hospital, Doddanagudde by Shetty, while the mother and daughter are at Sakhi One Stop Centre temporarily after initial medication. Brahmavar Police helped in the rescue operation.

Due to the man with mental illness, the locals too were terrified and the woman and daughter were deprived of good nutrition. Though ration was supplied they were unable to utilise it properly, reports said.
