Udupi: The serene town of Kapu has been battered by heavy winds and relentless rainfall in the past few days, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The unforgiving weather has resulted in the damage of over ten houses and properties estimated to be worth lakhs of rupees.

The situation has been exacerbated by continuous heavy rainfall over the last two weeks, raising concerns about potential flooding in low-lying areas once again. The raging waters have already submerged several places, including Innanje, near Markodi Stream, Kapu Janardhana Temple, Mallaru, Mulur, and Belapu Lake, as well as Uliyargoli Kaipunjalu Lake.

The consequences of the persistent rainfall have been dire, with waterlogging in previously affected areas making farming tasks arduous and leading to severe damage to paddy cultivation. Unfortunately, the situation has taken a turn for the worse as the heavy rains have caused the complete submergence of paddy fields spanning hundreds of hectares, leaving farmers anxious about potential crop losses.

Adding to the farmers’ woes is the scarcity of labour for agricultural work, making it even more challenging to resume farming activities amidst the recurrent downpours. With uncertainty looming, farmers are grappling with the grim possibility of their hard work going to waste.

In response to the calamity, Kapu MLAs, taluk-level officials, personnel from the revenue department, and elected representatives visited the flood-affected areas to conduct a thorough inspection of the damage. The authorities are now actively working on relief measures to aid those affected and assess the extent of assistance required to mitigate the situation.

Local authorities are urging residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this challenging time. As the rain continues to fall, the town of Kapu remains on high alert, hoping for a respite from the relentless deluge that has wreaked havoc on the lives and properties of its inhabitants.
