A Traditional Week programme will take place on November 30 and December 1 at the historic old DC building, which has long been a symbol of Dakshina Kannada’s administrative legacy. Once known as the Collector’s Office during British rule, the building served as the administrative center for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kasargod districts. It was also the headquarters for British officers before India’s Independence and continued as the deputy commissioner’s office after Independence. Despite the relocation of the DC office, the building has been preserved in its original form and stands today as a testament to the region’s historical significance.
The Traditional Week programme aims to raise awareness of the building’s rich heritage and educate the public, particularly students, about its historical value. The events scheduled for November 30 include a painting competition at 10 am for government school students in grades 3 to 10, where participants will depict ancient memorial buildings of their choice. At 2 pm, college students will participate in an architecture competition focused on enhancing the building’s aesthetic appeal. Traditional walks will be held from 11 am to 12 noon and again from 3 pm to 4 pm. The day will conclude with an open interaction session and prize distribution at 4:30 pm, followed by a musical performance at 6 pm. A traditional art exhibition will also run from 10 am to 6 pm on both days.
The district administration plans to organize more activities at the historic site in the future to attract tourists and further highlight its cultural importance.
