Shira: A crane accident on Saturday night near the BESCOM office in Shira, Tumkur district, has reignited concerns about the ongoing gas pipeline work in the city’s heart. Despite widespread opposition from residents, the city council has allowed the project to proceed, prompting allegations of neglecting public safety.

The incident occurred while workers were laying a gas pipeline on Amarapura Road, near BESCOM. A crane lost control while driving a gas pipe into place, fell, and struck an electric wire, causing an electric pole to break. Fortunately, the accident happened at night, averting potential disasters.

This is not the first incident in the area. Three days ago, a JCB used to remove potholes for the pipeline work bent electricity poles, further alarming locals.

Residents are questioning the city council’s decision to allow the gas pipeline to pass through the city centre, citing safety risks. The council’s silence on the matter has only fueled public anger.

By Sunday morning, the broken electric pole was replaced, and the power lines were repaired. However, the incident has highlighted the need for greater transparency and accountability in the project’s execution.
