In a proactive move to enhance pedestrian safety, the Yeshwantpur traffic police have taken measures to address risks along a 700-meter stretch between Govardhan Cinemas and the Vivekananda statue on Tumakuru Road in Bengaluru.
Following an increase in accidents from four non-fatal incidents and zero fatalities in 2021 to three fatal and four non-fatal accidents in 2023, the traffic police identified pedestrian crossings as a key concern. Pedestrians attempting to cross the road despite existing barricades were cited as a contributing factor to the rise in accidents.
To mitigate this risk, the Yeshwantpur traffic police installed six-foot-high grills along the median, positioned between metro pillars, effectively preventing pedestrians from crossing the road at unauthorized points. Since the installation of these grills approximately three months ago, the accident count has dropped to zero.
An officer from the Yeshwantpur station emphasized the effectiveness of the grills in curbing accidents, noting the significant improvement in safety along the stretch. This initiative underscores the commitment of the authorities to prioritize pedestrian safety and mitigate road hazards in urban areas.
