BENGALURU: The extended Green Line of Namma Metro on Tumakuru Road from Nagasandra to Madavara (BIEC) is set to commence commercial operations by October. Maheshwar Rao, MD of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), announced that trial runs will soon start on the 3-km stretch. This extension, part of Namma Metro’s phase II, includes three new stations: Manjunathnagar, Chikkabidarakallu, and Madavara.
The line will open after receiving safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), expected by September. This extension will increase the Metro network to 76 km in the city. Currently, trains on the Green Line terminate at Nagasandra, but with the extension, services will operate till Madavara. Depending on ridership, the frequency of services will be adjusted. BMRCL anticipates an additional ridership of 25,000 to 30,000.
Construction at Madavara is nearing completion, with traction power supply almost ready. Trial tests on the line will occur within weeks.
The extension to Madavara will benefit Bengalureans by providing seamless access to the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre and easing traffic congestion. It will also facilitate travel for people from Nelamangala and nearby villages. Parking space for long-distance buses at Madavara station will enhance Metro accessibility.
Under Phase II, BMRCL has extended operational lines in four directions, with three extensions already opened. Delays due to construction issues, land acquisition, and the pandemic affected the project. Future phases will connect Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara, RV Road to Bommsandra, and Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport.
