Ovinakere Shines as the Jackfruit Hub in Tumkur District
Tumkur district is renowned for its vast number of jackfruit trees, making it the top producer of jackfruit in Karnataka. Within the district, Chelur holds the distinction of being the largest jackfruit trading center in South India.
While many people are aware of the abundance of jackfruit in the region, only a few understand its value and potential for value addition. In 2013, women from a local self-help society gained attention by showcasing various dishes made from jackfruit at a cassava fair held in Ovinakere.
Chelur has been home to a bustling jackfruit market for over five decades. Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, large quantities of jackfruit are transported to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and smaller quantities to Rajasthan, Gujarat, New Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. Moreover, Tumkur’s quality cantaloupes have gained popularity and are sold at good prices in hilly and coastal regions within Karnataka.
The district’s fruits are known for their low water content and delightful taste and fragrance. Manjamma from Ovinakere comments that they are often likened to cakes due to their delectable qualities.
Approximately 500 tons of mature fruit along with 500 tons of young nuts leave the district each year during a four-month period.
In July 2008, the organization ‘Bife’ hosted a successful jackfruit fair in Tipatur. Other events such as a Jackfruit Festival at Nittur and Alakshya fruit fairs at Tumkur APMC were organized by government departments.
Former Deputy Director of Horticulture Dr. Savita Karunakaran facilitated mango and jackfruit sales at Tumkur Government Junior College Grounds. Reflecting her commitment, she visited numerous villages across the district, surveying hundreds of trees. Her efforts resulted in the release of popular varieties like ‘Sidhu’ and ‘Shankara,’ named after their respective growers, in recognition of their contribution to the country’s jackfruit trends.”
