Tension flared at the district hospital mortuary on Friday as the family of an 8-year-old boy, Hemanth, who died after an electrocution incident, staged a protest. The boy’s parents and relatives alleged that BESCOM was responsible for the tragedy.
Hemanth was participating in an Independence Day celebration at his government school in Huyildore Kaval, Sira taluk, when he accidentally touched a live guy wire, resulting in electrocution. Despite the clear signs of electrocution, BESCOM officials initially attributed the cause of death to cardiac arrest.
Hemanth’s father, Thimmaiah, a hearing-impaired coolie, and his mother, Jayalakshmi, a farm laborer, have been left devastated by the loss. They, along with local residents and Bhovi community leaders, gathered at the mortuary to demand accountability.
JDLP leader B. Suresh Babu visited the protestors and assured them of government compensation. Meanwhile, the police have filed an FIR against the concerned BESCOM Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE), and an investigation is underway. The final cause of death will be confirmed once the post-mortem report is available.
