The valedictory celebration of the 100th birth anniversary of Servant of God Fr Alfred Roche took place on Thursday, April 3, at Holy Family Church, Brahmavar. The solemn mass was led by Fr John Alwyn Dias, OFM Cap, provincial superior of the Holy Trinity Capuchin Province in Karnataka, joined by fellow priests.
During his message, Fr Dias praised the remarkable life of Fr Roche, calling him a beacon of hope and devotion. He said the priest embraced suffering with grace and always remained faithful to Christ’s teachings. “His mission was rooted in love and guided by unwavering faith,” he said, adding that Roche was a spiritual shepherd, much like Moses and Christ, inspiring countless lives.
The ceremony included a special prayer service at Fr Roche’s tomb. Devotees prayed for intercession and remembered his deep compassion. Each participant received a keepsake and a booklet of prayers, symbolising a continued spiritual bond with the Servant of God.
The event ended with a communal meal, bringing together people from all walks of life. Fr John Fernandes, the parish priest, expressed gratitude to all attendees, including the Capuchin friars, trust members, and faithful from across regions such as Karwar, Sasthan, and Binaga.
Fr Roche, born Peter John in Moodahadu on April 3, 1924, served as the first Capuchin vicar of Brahmavar. Known for his humble and saintly life, he passed away in 1996, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, prayer, and service.
