In a shocking turn of events, a bride reportedly fled with gold jewellery worth lakhs just weeks after her wedding. The complainant, Denis Cardoza, a 64-year-old resident of Saligrama, Brahmavar, has filed a police complaint against his daughter-in-law, Anusha, for theft.
According to the complaint, Anusha married Denis Cardoza’s son, Anthony Dalwin Cardoza, on December 26, 2023, at St. Anthony Church in Sasthan. The families were introduced by an acquaintance, Latha Mary from Udupi, and after discussions, both sides agreed to the marriage. Following the wedding, Anusha moved into the complainant’s home.
On February 9, 2024, Anusha told her husband she needed to visit her maternal home urgently due to her mother’s ill health, assuring him she would return in four days. The complainant’s wife, Jacintha M D Almeida, who was working at a school in Udupi, instructed their son to give Anusha Rs 5,000 for travel expenses. Anthony Dalwin Cardoza dropped her off at the Udupi KSRTC bus stand and sent her on a bus to Hassan.
Later that evening, upon returning home, Jacintha noticed that the cupboard was left open, and upon inspection, several gold ornaments were found missing. These included a 40-gram black bead necklace, four 10-gram gold bangles, a 24-gram gold chain, three gold rings, and a pair of earrings.
When contacted, Anusha allegedly admitted to taking the jewellery but promised to return them. However, interactions turned hostile when Anusha’s mother, Vineetha Joan, along with others, reportedly hurled abuse at the complainant’s family and demanded Rs 25 lakh in exchange for returning the stolen items.
Following a private complaint filed in court, the Kota police have registered a case, and investigations are underway.
