Udupi: In a surprise raid, Udupi police uncovered an illegal gambling operation being run from a chicken shed in Billadi village, Brahmavar taluk, and arrested seven individuals for participating in card games.

The accused have been identified as Jayakar Poojary (42), Chakrapani (60), Nilesh Kothari (43), Jagadish Acharya (45), Gopal, Sadashiva Shastri, and Kalappa Nayak (59). Acting on credible information, police raided the location and found the group engaged in gambling.

Authorities seized ₹9,880 in cash, along with eight mobile phones, a car, a scooter, and various items associated with the illegal activity.

According to officials, the gambling sessions were being conducted discreetly in the rural shed to avoid public attention. The suspects were caught red-handed, and police believe such gatherings had been held frequently in the same location.

A case has been filed at the Kota police station, and investigations are ongoing to determine if others are involved or if similar operations exist elsewhere in the region.

This is part of the police’s continued efforts to clamp down on illegal gambling dens across Udupi district. Authorities have urged citizens to report any suspicious gatherings or activities in their neighbourhoods.

Police have also issued a warning that strict action will be taken against anyone involved in promoting or participating in gambling, especially in rural areas where such acts often go unnoticed.
