On March 20, the District Civil Committee, in partnership with Netra Jyothi Institution, hosted a celebration to mark the return of senior astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore after an extraordinary 286 days aboard the space station—far surpassing their planned eight-day mission. The event took place at the Netra Jyothi Institution, where hundreds of female students gathered, holding portraits of Sunita Williams and offering their well wishes.
The celebration was further enhanced by a grand fireworks display in front of the college, creating a festive and inspiring atmosphere. Renowned physicist Professor A P Bhat delivered an enlightening lecture, discussing the technical challenges of space missions and the critical role NASA played in ensuring the astronauts’ safe return. “This event is truly meaningful, as it introduces students to an inspiring personality like Sunita Williams. She must be honored for conducting experiments in space for 285 days,” he remarked.
Dr Krishna Prasad, trustee of Netra Jyothi Group of Institutions and medical director of Prasad Netralaya Group of Eye Hospitals, emphasized the importance of space exploration for scientific progress. “Sunita Williams’ strength and willpower are commendable. Despite health challenges, she surprised the world with her resilience. This is a proud moment for India, as she has roots in our country,” he said.
The event was attended by leaders Krishna Moorthy Acharya and Professor Dayananda, alongside committee members, students, and faculty, all celebrating the astronauts’ monumental achievement.
