Congress to Hold Massive Rally in Kapu on April 24
Kaup: The Udupi District Congress, in coordination with multiple party wings, will stage a large-scale protest rally in Kapu on April 24 to oppose the central government’s “repressive and anti-people” policies under BJP rule.
Addressing the media at the Kapu Press Club, former minister Vinay Kumar Sorake announced that the rally will begin at 10:30 am from Shri Lakshmi Janardhana Temple and move through Kapu town, concluding with a major public gathering. The protest will highlight key issues such as rising fuel and LPG prices, the Waqf Act, and the chargesheet filed against senior Congress leaders in the National Herald case, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
Sorake also took a swipe at the BJP’s ongoing ‘Janakrosh Yatra’ led by state president B Y Vijayendra, sarcastically questioning if the campaign was more of a celebration following Basangouda Patil Yatnal’s ouster than genuine public anger. He pointed out the irony of a price hike on LPG (₹50) and petrol/diesel (₹2) on the very day of the BJP’s campaign launch. He also noted that the Supreme Court has granted a temporary stay on the Waqf Act, further justifying their protest.
District Congress president Ashok Kumar Kodavoor stated that the demonstration also stands in defense of Karnataka’s ‘Five Guarantee Schemes’, which he said the BJP has been unjustly opposing. He added that nearly 5,000 people are expected to take part.
Leaders present included INTUC president Kiran Hegde, Mahabala Kundar, Shantalata Shetty, Sharfuddin Sheikh, Niyaz Ahmad, and Jitendra Furtado.
