Cyclone Fengal devastates Mattu Gulla crops in Udupi
Cyclone Fengal‘s untimely rains wreaked havoc in Udupi district, destroying nearly 80 acres of Mattu Gulla, a GI-tagged eggplant variety. Around 85 farmers from Mattu and nearby villages such as Kaipunjal, Pangala, and Uliyaragoli suffered severe losses, with an estimated 75% of crops, including those ready for harvest, being damaged.
Lakshman Mattu, president of the Mattu Gulla Growers’ Association, detailed the extent of the damage: “From each acre, farmers typically harvest 4-5 tonnes annually. This year, the flooding ruined crops during the harvesting season, leaving growers in distress. The delicate saplings cannot withstand stagnant water, leading to fallen flowers and damaged fruit.” In addition to Mattu Gulla, watermelon crops in the area were also destroyed.
The association has urged the horticulture and revenue departments to provide compensation, including for farmers cultivating without RTCs (Records of Rights, Tenancy, and Crops). A memorandum seeking government support has already been submitted.
Horticulture department officials have responded, advising farmers to submit detailed applications for compensation. The association has requested the government to ensure that all affected growers, regardless of land ownership documentation, receive relief.
The devastation underscores the urgent need for support to protect farmers who rely on this unique crop, a symbol of Udupi’s agricultural heritage.
