Udupi: Dr M. A. Saleem, Director General and Inspector General of Police (DGP & IGP), Karnataka, visited Udupi district on Monday, April 20, to conduct a comprehensive review of police operations, infrastructure and community policing initiatives.
During the visit, he inspected key facilities, including the coastal security police station at Malpe and the district police office in Udupi. The inspection aimed to assess preparedness, operational efficiency and infrastructure adequacy in the coastal district.
Senior officers accompany DGP
The DGP was accompanied by Amit Singh, Inspector General of Police (Western Range, Mangaluru), and Vikas Kumar Vikas, along with senior officers of the coastal security police.
Following the inspections, a review meeting was held at the district police office auditorium. The meeting was attended by Hariram Shankar, Superintendent of Police, Sudhakar S Nayak, Additional SP, and other senior officials.
Focus on law and order
Addressing the officers, Dr Saleem appreciated the efforts of the Udupi police in maintaining communal harmony in the district. He directed the force to continue its proactive approach in handling sensitive situations and ensuring public safety.
He issued strict instructions to take firm action against rowdy elements and individuals involved in illegal activities. The DGP emphasised that maintaining law and order requires both preventive measures and effective enforcement.
Emphasis on crime prevention and investigation
The DGP highlighted the importance of focusing on the prevention and detection of theft cases. He also stressed the need for timely disposal of pending criminal investigations to improve efficiency and public trust in the police system.
Officials were advised to enhance coordination, improve response mechanisms and ensure accountability in handling cases.
Strengthening community policing initiatives
Dr Saleem noted that the “Aasare” programme, introduced during his tenure as Udupi SP, has now been implemented across Karnataka. He commended its successful execution in the district.
He also called for strengthening other community-oriented initiatives such as “Mane Mane Police,” “Spandana,” and child helpline services. These programmes are aimed at building trust between the police and the public, while addressing social concerns at the grassroots level.
Aim to become a model police district
Referring to Udupi’s high literacy rate, the DGP encouraged the police force to aspire to become a model department at both state and national levels. He said the district’s educational achievements should be reflected in the efficiency and professionalism of its policing system.
He urged officers to adopt best practices, maintain discipline and work towards excellence in service delivery.
