Karkala: A diesel spill on the Mala Ghat stretch of National Highway 169 triggered a series of accidents on Tuesday, with several cars skidding and overturning on the slippery road amid wet weather. No fatalities were reported, though a few occupants sustained minor injuries.
The mishaps occurred on the winding ghat section connecting Karkala and Kudremukh after diesel leaked onto the carriageway, making the surface extremely hazardous for motorists travelling through the rain-soaked stretch.
Vehicles lose control on slippery road
According to reports, multiple vehicles lost traction after driving over the diesel-covered road. Some cars skidded off the carriageway while others overturned, causing panic among motorists and resulting in temporary traffic disruption.
Local residents and fellow commuters rushed to assist those involved in the accidents before emergency personnel arrived at the scene.
Authorities launch clean-up operation
Police and highway authorities reached the spot and regulated traffic while steps were taken to remove the spilled diesel and restore safe driving conditions. Sand and other absorbent materials were spread across the affected stretch to reduce the risk of further accidents.
Officials also began efforts to identify the vehicle responsible for the diesel leak.
Motorists urged to exercise caution
The Mala Ghat section is known for its sharp curves and steep gradients, with the risk of accidents increasing significantly during the monsoon season. Authorities advised motorists to drive slowly, maintain safe distances and remain alert while negotiating the ghat roads, especially during rainfall.
Traffic was gradually restored after the road was cleared, though officials continued to monitor the stretch to prevent further mishaps.
