Manipal: An elderly woman, Pushpa Naik (66), was found dead near her home in Nehru Nagar, Saralebettu, under circumstances suggesting a possible leopard attack. The tragic incident has raised concerns among residents about increasing leopard activity in the area.

Incident details

Pushpa Naik had gone to a nearby hillock opposite her house on Thursday evening to collect grass for her cows. When she failed to return, her family and neighbours searched for her throughout the evening but could not locate her.

Her body was discovered the following morning in a heap near her house, with visible injuries to her neck and hands. Her son, Ganesh Naik, reported that the wounds appeared consistent with an animal attack, leading to suspicions of a leopard’s involvement.

Leopard menace in the area

Residents of Saralebettu have reported an increase in leopard sightings, adding to fears that the predator may be responsible for this incident. However, authorities have yet to confirm if a leopard attack caused her death or if other factors were involved.

Investigation underway

The Manipal police have registered a case and are actively investigating. They are working with wildlife authorities to ascertain the cause of death and assess the possibility of leopard involvement. Meanwhile, locals have urged authorities to address the rising threat posed by wild animals in the region.
